The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Our Lady of Hope) was originally built in the 15th century and underwent alterations in the 16th. In the 18th century, after the great earthquake of 1755 which destroyed so many of Portugal’s historic buildings, the chapel was rebuilt, although the leper’s hospital, which was once attached to the chapel, was not. The interior has a carved and gilded altar. The exterior is noted for its cupola and bell tower, which are decorated with rococo ornamentation.
