The Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça ou de Lippe (Our Lady of Grace) is situated little more than a kilometre to the north of the fortress town of Elvas and stands on an imposing rocky outcrop. Built in 1763, it is a true masterpiece of 18th century European military architecture and is outstandingly beautiful. Being a border town, Elvas was constantly under attack and played an important part in the Peninsular War. The walled city, together with the Forte de Santa Luzia south of Elvas and the Forte da Graça to the north, formed an impressive line of defence.
