The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Castelo was built in the 13th century, having been commissioned by Paio Peres Correia who, in 1242, became Grand Master of the Military Order of Santiago. The church was erected after the conquest of Castelo during the reign of King D. Sancho II. In 1510 the church was renovated with a Manueline design and, in the 17th century, was decorated with glazed tile panels (azuelos). There is widespread worship of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, Our Lady of Castelo, in the Alentejo region. The church is now rarely used for religious ceremonies and is open to visitors.
