Located to the north of the town is the early 16th century church of Our Lady of Ajuda. This was built on the ruins of a church dedicated to St Vincent, which initially housed the image of the Virgin Mary found in a small cave on the Papoa promontory. A notable feature is the chancel, devoted to the Virgin Mary, St Peter Gonzalez and St. Vincent, with a carved and gilded altarpiece from the 17th century. Note also the painted ceilings and the 18th century azulejo tile panels depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and from secular life.
