Located about 35 km north west of Pombal and stretching along the Mata Nacional do Urso protected area, the unspoiled Osso da Baleia (Whalebone) Beach has received an environmental award for its combination of tourism and protection. Quiet and distanced from the road by sand dunes, it is nevertheless used extensively in summer. The beach is well suited to surfing and body boarding, it has EEC blue flag status, lifeguards are on duty in season and there are facilities for the disabled. Parking is available, the average seawater temperature in summer is16-18 ºC and there are bar, café and restaurant facilities.
