The Largo de Camões at the end of the Ponte Velha, with its cafes, restaurants and celebrated fountain, is a landmark of Ponte de Lima. The fountain was ordered by the town council in 1575 and completed in 1603. It is attributed to local sculptor João Lopes the younger and was partially funded by a tax on salt and olive oil. Originally placed in what is now the Largo Dr António Magalhães, it was moved to its present location in 1929. Renaissance in style, it features the municipal coat of arms and a notice of the fines for dirtying the fountain.
