Designed by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, this modern architectural masterpiece was completed at a cost of £100 million to serve the Expo.1998 in the adjacent Parque das Nações. The glass and steel roof is carried on 25 metre columns, giving the impression of a row of palm trees. The complex houses a metro station, a bus terminal and a shopping centre in addition to the railway station. The entrance to the metro has large scale tile murals designed by well-known contemporary artists.
