The 12th century convent consists of a church, sacristy, chapter room, dining hall, cloisters and bell tower. The marble entranceway has a royal shield dated 1717 and the insignia of the Order is carved into the stone of the outer walls. The church houses the marble tomb of the last elected master of Avis, Fernão Rodrigues de Sequeira. In the main chapel is a beautifully carved Baroque altarpiece. The pews in the upper choir stalls from the late 17th century are considered some of the finest examples of Portuguese Rocaille. On the ground floor, the Municipal Museum has archaeological exhibits and scale replicas of monuments.
