Oliveira do Hospital, as its name implies, once belonged to the Knight Hospitallers, given to them in 1120 by the mother of Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. Beside the mother church (see separate entry) is the 19th century town hall with a 16th century Manueline pillory in front. The local museum is housed in the 19th century mansion of the Cabral Metelo family which has a chapel and beautiful private gardens, it exhibits the family art collection and local items. Other places to visit include the 18th century Santa Ana chapel, the ruins of Avo castle and the Roman ruins of Bobadela.
