The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290. It is the third oldest in Europe and Coimbra’s major tourist attraction. The current campus is built on the site of an old royal palace and was established here on the orders of King João III in 1537. Its alumni include the poet Luís Vas de Camões, St Anthony of Padua and the ex-dictator Dr Salazar. The 1733 bell tower, the 1634 Porta Ferréa entrance and the Private Examination Hall are of particular interest. See separate entries for the Joanina Library, St Michael’s Chapel and the Sala Grande dos Actos.
