Approximately 1 km north of Alcoutim, across the modern bridge that spans the Cadavais creek, can be found the ruins of Castelo Velho, atop a hill overlooking the river. This was once a Moorish settlement protected by ramparts and four-sided towers and was founded in the 8th century. The ruins are a fascinating reminder of a culture that had a profound influence on the Algarve, but has left little material evidence of its presence. This fortified enclosure dominated a strategic point on the banks of the river.
