The Christian conquest of Albufeira began at the end of the 12th Century, leading to decades of conflict. A siege by the Knights of the Order of Santiago finally drove out the Moors in the reign of King D. Afonso III. Albufeira was, for centuries, strategically important to both sides of the conflict. The military battery is believed to have been built in the 16th Century on a part of the cliff top that reaches over forty metres in height. The collapse of part of the cliff opened a subterranean cave, which was used for the storage of munitions.
