Covilhã’s Old Jewish Quarter within the medieval city walls, the Judiaria, is bounded by the present day streets, Rua das Flores, Rua do Ginásio Clube, Rua da Alegria, Beco da Alegria and Travessa da Alegria. The community was devoted to the woollen trade and weaving, with which they were associated until the 15th century. In the narrow winding streets the houses follow the 2/3 storey medieval pattern having a lower floor shop and upper living quarters. Note the Manueline windows of Rua do Ginásio Clube 39 and Rua das Flores 29; the synagogue was originally in this latter street
