In 1879 Portugal and Spain entered into an agreement to construct a structural steel road and rail bridge over the River Minho, linking Valença do Minho in Portugal to Tui in Spain. The bridge is still in use today, although a new bridge has been subsequently built to the south. The distinguished French engineer and architect Gustav Eiffel (1832-1923) inspired the design and the bridge was inaugurated on the 25th March 1886, shortly before work on the Eiffel Tower in Paris started. The ramparts of the fortress overlook the bridge.
