The early 13th century Old Santa Clara Convent suffered continuously from floods and was eventually abandoned in 1677. Coimbra’s patron saint, Queen Isabel, lived here after the death of her husband King Dinis in 1325 and her tomb was taken by the nuns to the New Convent. The tragically murdered Ines Castro was also buried here, but was later moved to Alcobaca to lie next to her lover Dom Pedro I. Immersed in silt and water for more than 300 years, the site has been drained and is open for guided tours which include a new museum.
