The 12th century old cathedral was built in the reign of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, who made Coimbra his capital. Regarded as the finest example of Romanesque architecture in the country, the high altar with its elaborate depiction of the Assumption and the birth of Christ is particularly notable. It is the work of two Flemish master woodcarvers Oliver of Ghent and John of Ypres and dates from about 1502. The 16th century Renaissance font is thought to be the work of Diogo Pires the Younger.
