Near to the cathedral, this fortress-like building, with facades dating from the 14th, 17th and 18th centuries, is built in three different styles: Gothic, Mannerist and Baroque. A major fire destroyed the interior in the 18th century and the building now houses the municipal library and the district archives. The library is one of the most important old libraries in Portugal, containing more than 300,000 volumes and 10,000 priceless manuscripts, some dating from the 9th century. On the Rua do Souto side there is a nice fountain in the square.
