Located about 10 km west of Lisbon, the town of Oeiras has always been popular as a summer residence for the wealthy. Apart from the separately listed attractions there are the following additional forts, Nossa Senhora das Mercês de Catalezete, Nossa Senhora do Porto Salvo ou da Giribita, São Bruno de Caxias, São João das Maias and Areeiro. Poet’s Park is large and has statues of Portuguese poets and writers and the Manuel de Brito Arts Centre is in the Palácio dos Anjos. Markets are on Saturdays and rotate between Santo Amaro de Oeiras, Paço de Arcos and Algés.
