Originally built in the 16th century, the church has been rebuilt twice. The first renovation took place during the reign of D. João III and the second in the 17th century during the Wars of Restoration. The church is decorated in the Manueline style and has a beautiful doorway of red Silves sandstone. The altars have 18th century icons, including a Christ in Indo-Portuguese ivory which is notable for its dramatic expression. Key features include 17th century azulejo panels and a gilded woodwork altarpiece. There are good views over Lagos bay from outside the church.
