Just above Portinho da Arrábida is a small fort built in 1670 by Pedro, the then Prince Regent, as protection for the Convento da Arrábida against Moorish pirates. Since 1991 it has housed the Oceanographic Museum. Interesting features on the fort itself are the coat of arms, engraved stones above the entrance, and the statue of the Virgin Mary. The museum has a room devoted to the collection of the Setúbal naturalist, Luiz Gonzaga do Nascimento and aquaria containing fauna, flora and specimens from the area, including octopus, starfish and sea urchins.
