Opened in 1997, the Archaeological and Numismatic museum houses more than 30,000 coin specimens, of which a selection of about 5,000 are exhibited in a permanent exhibition. The collection, one of the largest in Europe, was based on a donation by Father Jão-Ribeiro Parente, which has subsequently been considerably enlarged. Covering the period from the 5th century BC to the 8th century AD, there are gold, silver, bronze and even lead coins from many countries and civilisations. The ground floor contains the archaeological section and of particular interest is the large scale model of the nearby temple of Panóias.
