The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is also known as the Igreja das Chagas do Salvador (the Church of the Wounds of the Saviour). Originally founded by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, the current building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Rectangular in shape, the front façade is triangular. A triumphal arch leads into the main chapel, where the marble retable and panels of decorated tiles depicting scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life are quite superb. Over the arch are portraits of the Evangelists. The church exhibits images depicting the battle of Ourique, similar to those in the Royal Basilica.
