Our Lady of Miracles Church (patron saint of the island) is located near the harbour. Renovated at the end of the 18th century, the church contains an exquisite 16th century statue of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres - the Virgin and Child - of Flemish origin, which was perhaps imported from Melines. The statue dates from 1632 and was highly worshipped as it allegedly saved once the inhabitants from a pirate raid. There is also a 17th-century Indo-Portuguese ivory crucifix. At the Largo do Outeiro is the island’s only Holy-Ghost chapel.
