Regarded as one of the outstanding monuments in Montemor-o-Velho, the former monastic church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos and its cloister are from the 15th/16th centuries. The church has a 17th century façade with a spacious and rich interior which has Manueline and Renaissance influences. It contains the magnificent tomb of the explorer Diogo de Azambuja (1432-1518), carved during his lifetime, by the Manueline master sculptor Diogo Pires. It is said that the other great explorer, Christopher Columbus, sailed with Azambuja during his navigation of the West African coast.
