The interior of the 16th-century octagonal church of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, overlooking the public pillory in Largo Santa Clara, is one of the prettiest sights in Portugal. Its extremely plain exterior gives little hint of the beauty within. Its main appeal lies in the fine marble columns and spectacular yellow and blue azulejo glazed tiles that reach into the cupola. These were added in the 17th century. The building was originally a place of worship for the Knights Templar.
