The church of Nossa Senhora do Terço, part of a former Benedictine convent, lies on the north side of the Campo da Republica. Its plain exterior conceals a beautiful interior decorated in Portuguese baroque style. The church was built in the 18th century by King João V in compliance with the wishes of his father King Pedro II. The azulejo panels depicting the life of St Benedict are outstanding, as are the canopied pulpit by Gabriel Rodrigues Álvares and the carved and gilded woodwork of the altars attributed to Ambrósio Coelho.
