The chapel of Nossa Senhora do Socorro is located at Albergaria-a-Velha, approximately 18 km northeast of Aveiro, on a hill with a superb vista of the region from the viewpoint above the chapel. The sanctuary’s name translates as ‘Our Lady of Aid’ and it was built in 1859 in thanksgiving for the protection of the Virgin Mary during a widespread cholera epidemic. The third Sunday in August is the day of pilgrimage. Whilst in Albergaria-a-Velha take the opportunity to visit the 18th century house and chapel of Santo António.
