Built in 1818 on the site of 15th century chapel, the twin towered baroque façade of the church of Our Lady of Monte looks down on the capital of Funchal and is reached by climbing 74 steps. A side chapel contains the tomb of Emperor Karl 1 of Hapsburg, who came to Madeira after being exiled in 1918. This chapel also contains beautiful gold pieces crafted in the 17th and 18th centuries. On August 15th each year, penitents climb the steps on their knees, to worship the tiny statue of the Virgin Mary on the high altar.
