The present Nossa Senhora do Ó Chapel is not the original chapel containing the Nossa Senhora do Ó statue, which was the Porta da Ribeira chapel demolished in 1821. The image was transferred, to what was then the Nossa Senhora da Piedade or Cais Chapel in the Largo do Terreiro and was subsequently renamed. The present chapel dates from the 17th century and was remodelled in the 19th century after damage during the Liberal Wars (1828-1834) over royal succession. Interesting features include the early 18th century retable by João da Costa and the niche on the façade housing the bell.
