Vagos is well known for its Nossa Senhora de Vagos Sanctuary, originally built around the time of the founding of Portugal in the 12th century. Rebuilt in the 17th century, this Carmelite sanctuary was a daily place of pilgrimage for the neighbouring communities and has a number of curious legends associated with it. The church was modified in the 19th century when a chapel was rebuilt. The stone statues of the patron saint are from the 17th century. The pilgrimage and procession days are the Monday after Whitsunday and the Monday during Pentecost.
