The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Aires is a church and sanctuary in which a statue of the former patron saint, Nossa Senhora da Piedade, is venerated. The statue shows Our Lady sitting with the dead body of Jesus in her arms, and is connected to a legend whereby help has always been provided to true believers, as confirmed by the countless offerings on display. This baroque-style sanctuary, which looks more like a palace than a religious building, was designed by Father João Batista. Key aspects of the interior include the Rococo-style carved woodwork altar and the Ançã stone statue of the patron saint.
