The Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Pazes is a hermitage built to symbolize the unity between the people of Vila Verde de Ficalho and the neighbouring Spanish settlement of Rosal de la Frontera. After the long wars between Portugal and Spain over sovereignty, the hermitage was a sign of peace between the two countries. The site has limited architectural interest, but is worth viewing and the carved stonework surrounding the niche of the Virgin Mary is very attractive. The feast of Nossa Senhora das Pazes is held on the second Sunday of Easter.
