Built in the 16th century, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação was modified and enlarged in the 18th century. Notable features include a beautiful Baroque façade, which feature masonry work in local stone and black basalt sculptures. An interesting and attractive sight is the azulejo-tiled bell tower. This church is one of the most harmonious structures of the island. According to local traditions this was where the first mass of the Holy Spirit was celebrated in the archipelago of the Azores.
