The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha, the patron saint of Grândola, is a 17th century building some little distance from the town. Although is has a very simple exterior, the interior is highly interesting. Beautifully decorated with gilt and 18th-century azulejo panels in the Manueline style, it is a work of art. The festivities of the patron saint are held on the last Sunday in May. In a ceremony dating back centuries, the statue is taken in a procession from the Sanctuary to the parish church, where it remains until the end of the celebrations.
