The Church of Nossa Senhora da Penha (Our Lady of Pity) is a place of pilgrimage and worship. Located high on a hill to the west of Portalegre, access is either via car or the long carved polychromatic marble stairway. Whichever way you choose, the views alone make the trip worthwhile. The governor of Portalegre, João Zuzarte da Fonseca ordered its construction in 1620 on the site of an old chapel. In 1675 it was given to the Agostinhos Descalços Monks. Baroque in style, and of simple design, it is charming and has a great deal of religious symbolism.
