The pleasant rural town of São Torcato is situated 5 km northeast of Guimarães and is named after one of the first men to spread Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula during the 7th century. The saint’s relics are kept in a Sanctuary, which forms part of a group of buildings designed by the Russian architect Louis Bohnstedet in the 19th century. The Sanctuary, which is a national monument and pilgrimage site, has an adjacent museum. The Chapel of Fonte do Santo (Saint’s Fountain) may also be visited.
