Founded in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques as a thanksgiving for his victory in the battle of Ourique (1139), this church was restored and enlarged in the 14th century by King João I in order to fulfil a promise made before his victory at the battle of Aljubarrota (1385). The architect was Mestre João Garcia of Toledo and, at this time, most of the original Romanesque cloister was demolished. The silver altar in the sacramental chapel is greatly valued, as are the Gothic altar and the patterned tiles of a chapel in the sacristy.
