On the south side of the São Lázaro garden is the college and church of Nossa Senhora da Esperança. Work on the college, which was for orphaned children, began in 1724, but due to lack of funds was only completed in 1743. The church was designed by Nicolau Nasoni in 1746 and finished in 1763; its classical façade is framed by the college buildings. Over the attractive portal is a niche containing a statue of Our Blessed Lady of Hope, with an ornate window on either side. The rococo carved altarpiece with its throne, flanked by garlanded Solomonic columns, is unusual.
