Elvas has some of the most beautiful churches in the Alentejo and, not far from the former cathedral, the church of Nossa Senhora da Consolaçao (Our Lady of Consolation) is one of the most interesting. Founded in the mid 16th century, the church was substantially altered in the 17th century. The building’s unusual octagonal central building is part of the former Dominican monastery. The church has an impressive dome, borne on columns, which is entirely covered with azulejos tiles depicting religious scenes.
