On the way up to the Convent of Christ is the Renaissance chapel of Our Lady of the Conception. Built in the mid 16th century, and intended as a mausoleum for King Joćo III, it was designed initially by Joćo of Castilho and later finished by Diogo de Torralva. The King died unexpectedly in 1957 and, for political reasons, was never buried here. The simplicity of the exterior contrasts with the graceful carved white Corinthian columns of the interior and it is considered one of the best examples of early Renaissance architecture in Portugal.
