Situated on the north side of the Praça da República, the church of Nossa Senhora da Assunçao served as a cathedral from 1570 to 1882 during the period when Elvas was the Episcopal See. Originally Late Gothic, the church was rebuilt in the 16th century in the Manueline style by the same architect who designed the aqueduct. The main facade, with its classic portico, stems from the late 17th, early 18th centuries. It has a beautiful three aisled interior with polychrome azulejo decoration. The church is stunning at night when illuminated.
