Some 5 km northwest of Barcelos is the sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparaceida. In 1702, according to tradition and historical archives, the Virgin Mary appeared to a dumb shepherd, João Alves, who recovered his speech. His remains are buried inside the chapel and a statue of him was erected. The altar is built upon the site of the Virgin Mary’s appearance. There is a very low and narrow passageway carved into the rock, along which, it is believed, only those in a state of grace can pass. The pilgrimage of Senhora da Aparecida takes place on August 15.
