Perched on a rocky massif with merlons crowning the slopes, the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda on Monte da Ajuda has the appearance of a fortress rather than a chapel. Inside, a pointed arched doorway leads to the sacristy which was built at the end of the 15th century. The hermitage has many valuable possessions worth viewing, these include two azulejo tile panels depicting the various stages of the life of our Lady, produced in 1751 and an 18th-century statue.
