Construction of the new Convent of St Clara started in 1649. The nuns eventually moved in 1677, together with the body of St Isabel, as the old Convent was uninhabitable due to continual flooding. The renaissance-style cloisters, designed by Hungarian Carlos Mardel, were built in 1733. St Isabel was, as she wished, buried simply in a nun’s habit, but in 1696, after her canonization, the ecclesiastical hierarchy decided the present solid silver tomb at the main altar was more appropriate. The church has a rich baroque interior, but the convent is now used as an army barracks.
