Founded by the Jesuits in 1598, ‘new’ is a relative term. The church became the Episcopal seat of Coimbra in 1772 following the banning of the Jesuit Order by the Marquês de Pombal in 1759. Designed by Baltasar Álvares, the official architect for the Portuguese Jesuits, the early Baroque façade is impressive, as is the spacious barrel-vaulted interior. The choir stalls and the Manueline-style octagonal font were transferred from the old cathedral; the altar in the chancel still features Jesuit saints.
