North of the parish church in Praia da Vitória, in the Rua de São Paulo, you will find an impressive 17th-century building, which was remodelled in the 19th century and today houses a permanent exhibition of fine joinery works. This is the birthplace of the town’s most famous son, the novelist, poet, journalist and teacher Vitorino Nemésio (1901-1978). Some beautiful stone carvings can be seen in its backyard. In addition to his literary achievements, he was Director of the Faculty of Science of Lisbon. Mal Tiempo en el Canal was his first and only novel.
