The National Pantheon of Santa Engracia stands on the site of a former church, which was demolished in 1630 after it was considered desecrated by a robbery. Work commenced on the present church in 1682, but was only finally completed in 1966 after construction was halted in the 18th century. In 1916 the building was designated as the National Pantheon and today its dome is a feature of Lisbon’s skyline. The interior is covered with multicoloured marble slabs and the magnificent dome provides a panoramic view across Alfama and the Tagus.
