Built in the 14th century on the site of a Moorish castle, the Sintra national palace is the only surviving royal palace from the Middle Ages. Its two large conical towers, each 33 metres high, are Sintra’s dominant land marks. The buildings are a combination of Moorish, Gothic and Manueline styles. King John I was responsible for the rebuild, but others have continuously added to the complex. The Arab room contains what is said to be the largest collection of Mudejar Azulejos (coloured glazed tiles). Other highlights include the Magpie room and the kitchen, which can cater for 1000 diners.
