The architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro (1897-1957) designed the National Library in 1956 and the project was subsequently continued by his nephew António; it was opened in 1969. At the time it was regarded as a state of the art building in terms of facilities and support services. The library was founded in 1798 and had previously been housed in the Praço do Comércio and Chiado. It contains more than two million volumes, including one of the 48 existing copies of the Gutenberg Bible and many books which came from closed monasteries. The library also houses the Museu do Livro (Book Museum).
