The National Forest of Buçaco is a delightful area located about 4 km southwest of Luso. Some 260 acres in extent, part arboretum, with 700 tree species (300 imported) and part forest it has many attractions (see separate entries). Outstanding tree specimens include a Tasmanian Eucalyptus planted in 1876 and the Buçaco Cedar now 26 metres high, believed to have been planted in 1644. Do visit the Vale de Fetos (Valley of Ferns) and the Fonte Fria where the largest of the forest’s springs cascades down to a magnolia fringed pool. This is a place of pure magic.
